World Environment Day celebrations at Tata Chemicals
June 08, 2010

Conservation, care and commitment' was the mantra all across Tata Chemicals (TCL) on World Environment Day, which was celebrated on June 5, 2010 with a lot of support and contribution from employees. The sentiment 'Take care of the environment and it will take care of you' echoed through TCL as, from Mithapur to Haldia and from Babrala to Nanded, employees joined hands and came forward to protect and nurture the most important resource on our planet — the environment.

With the help of banners and posters displayed across plants, townships and offices, employees were sensitised to the theme 'Many species, one planet, one future'. A communications campaign, 'Act to nurture nature' that focused on how TCL is contributing towards the conservation of certain species, was conducted to raise awareness about the significance of biodiversity of flora and fauna. Eco polls were conducted through the intranet to evaluate and assess how responsibly employees use natural resources available to them.

One of the biggest threats that the environment faces today is plastic which harms biodiversity. In view of this, cotton and paper bags were distributed at various locations. Environment awareness quiz programs were organised for the families and children of employees to involve them and inculcate this awareness as a part of their lifestyle. Green badges representing TCL’s solidarity towards the protection of biodiversity were distributed and worn by all to champion the cause.

TCL Mithapur organised a unique quiz competition, 'Know your sustainability report' to familiarise employees with the various sections of Manthan — TCL's in-house publication. Environmental film shows, beach cleaning, free toy train rides for children, fun-filled games like tug of war, passing the ball and treasure hunt, and sports were organised by volunteers for children. The KM team from the Mithapur site organised a K café, where participants suggested 100 opportunities to reduce, reuse and recycle wastes.

We owe our children a clean and beautiful earth, and it is imperative that we teach them to care for the environment. In line with this sentiment, poster-making, drawing and poetry competitions were organised at various locations to make the younger generation more green-conscious.

To make the celebrations more fun and interesting, events like 'A Fun Eco Poem on Act to Nurture Nature', dumb charades and MAD-ADS were also conducted at the Mumbai and Nanded locations.

All in all, World Environment Day celebration became a fun-filled event all across TCL, even as employees committed to walking that extra mile to nurture nature and protect it.
