Business opportunities, employment and livelihood

Employment policy at Tata Chemicals Magadi (TCM) has a preference for locals in casual jobs recruitment. By policy, 75 per cent of casual workers at the soda ash plant and 100 per cent at the salt plant have to be locals.

TCM management has outsourced cleaning services in the offices and Magadi township to the local community. The company together with the local community is exploring business opportunities in tourism and diversification of livelihoods such as bee keeping, and posho mills (flour mills) for women groups.

In order to spur entrepreneurship amongst the local community, company policy requires that market stalls allocation in the township shall be 40 per cent for the local community, 20 per cent for employees and 40 per cent for others.

The company's objective is for the community to be self-sustaining and able to independently manage its own development.
