Economic Empowerment

Magadi Multipurpose Cooperative

Magadi Multipurpose Cooperative was initiated in February 2004 with membership from the local community, who are residents of the four group ranches in Magadi Division. Its membership grew from the initial 12 members to the current membership of about 1,000 community members.

Magadi Multipurpose Cooperative began contractual work within Tata Chemicals Magadi and they started with cleaning Magadi Township. Later, the cooperative expanded its portfolio to include civil jobs, trona movement, bead work and to run a car wash within Magadi Township.

The main purpose of establishing the cooperative was to economically empower the community by engaging them in income generation. It started slowly and developed much, to a point of employment creation as well as giving dividends to it members annually.
