Safety and health
People come first at Tata Chemicals. In its operations across
the globe, the company believes in ensuring the physical safety
and well being of the people within and outside its facilities
and that of the environment at large.
Safety norms:
Tata Chemicals invests a large amount of resources to reduce
workplace accidents and ensure a safe working environment.
All Tata Chemicals plants are certified with ISO 9001, ISO
14001 and OHSAS 18001.
In India, the company's Babrala unit has won the Sword of
Honour four times from the British Safety Council. The units
at Mithapur and Babrala are five-star rated facilities. All
three Tata Chemicals plants in India have won national and
international awards for their safety and health practices.The
Babrala plant has adopted the British Safety Council norms,
Mithapur has adopted the DuPont Safety System and Haldia,
Mithapur and Babrala all follow the DuPont Behavioural audit.
Tata Chemicals Europe has an Occupational Health
and Safety Policy that is based on the premise that all accidents
are preventable. This well established behavioural safety
programme that ensures that all people who work on the sites
are acting in the safest possible manner and are aware of
the consequences of unsafe behaviour. The company has set
itself a target of eliminating all injuries by creating a
culture of preventing injury and ill health at work. All employees
attend regular safety training days and further safety training
is specifically targeted to relevant workgroups as required.
In Kenya, Tata Chemicals Magadi is proud of its excellent
safety record which has been built up over many years of attention
to detail. A significant part of its revenue and capital expenditure
is focused on improving the safety of operations and on initiatives
to enhance the safety and health of employees.The company
has received several trophies and commendations for its safety
record.
Health checks:
The company protects the interests of its employees by providing
them with appropriate and up-to-date training and access to
development programmes. Health monitoring of its employees
include regular health check-ups, special health checks for
employees working in hazardous areas, eye, audiometry and
PF tests, ergonomic surveys, stress management, yoga, first
aid training, and other training workshops.
TCEL provides a comprehensive occupational health
service which actively monitors the health of employees and
offers a number of services to help improve their health -
physiotherapy and support to stop smoking being typical examples.
On a two-yearly basis, a Health and Safety Fayre provides
a two-day opportunity for employees and their families, contractors
and visitors to the sites to explore their own health and
ways it can be improved.
By adhering to world safety standards, promoting product and
operational safety, and encouraging the active participation
of every employee, TCL has created a healthy work environment
that complements its superior product line.
